Church for homosexuals

The Plain Dealer's religion editor, Darrell Holland, has written: “... no major American denomination has reversed its belief that homosexual acts are immoral . . .”

The Unitarian Universalist Association does not consider homosexual acts immoral, does not exclude avowed homosexuals from its ministry, and does not exclude homosexuals from full participation in the life of the church.

For two years the association has had an Office of Gay Concerns at its national headquarters in Boston, with Ms. Arlie Scott as its director. This office has been active in seeking legislation to bring full constitutional rights to homosexuals.

Unitarian Universalism stands for the rights of all persons under the constitution. Neither race nor sex nor sexual preference should stand in the way of the acceptance of all human beings as individuals who need places to live, jobs to work at and people to care for. All people are entitled to respect for their humanness.

The repeal of Dade County's civil rights ordinance shows that people in that Florida county, at least, have not yet accepted homosexuals as persons with the same rights as heterosexuals. Full civil rights for all people these are still words and not reality.

Instead of taking rights away from law-abiding persons, we might better work at ending the "kiddie porn" racket, in which the rights of children are flagrantly and viciously violated for financial gain by heterosexual people.

Anita Bryant has successfully

trampled on the Constitution.

My daughter will soon be in school.

I hope that she will be taught by gays or straights that we are a common humanity and that dignity in the face of bigotry and ignorance is admirable.

All this fuss about "gays." Who is "gay"? Men who wear bright-colored clothing? Men who wear earrings, beads and jewelry? Men with long hair? Unmarried men? Men who room together? A man who embraces another man? Male dancers? Male dress designers? Musicians? Beauticians? Artists? Male singers? Male cooks, chefs, bakers, nurses, etc.?

I ask, who is gay? How can we tell who is gay and who isn't?
